English-French dictionary
Introduction
This Group contains a two-way English-French dictionary of key CBNRM and CBNRM-related terms. A Background on this Group is available, as are Descriptions of these languages. In most cases, where comments on a translation are necessary, they are listed in the first part of the dictionary.
Content
English to French
- administration gestion. Comments: This is a problematic translation, as the French term also carries the meaning of 'management'. See 'gestion', 'management'
- advocacy (1) plaidoyer, (2) assistance en conseil. Comments: The word 'plaidoyer', which is borrowed from legal terminology, is often used
- animal ?
- bird ?
- CBNRM practitioner See: 'Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) practitioner'
- CBNRM stakeholder See: 'Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) stakeholder'
- Civil Society Organization (CSO) organisation de la sociétée civile

- common property resource management gestion ressources communes
- community communauté
- community-based (1) communautaire, (2) sur base communautaire
- Community-Based Coastal Resource Management (CBCRM) gestion communautaire des ressources côtières. Comments: This term was chosen because it contains the idea of a group strategy. Depending upon the location/level (e.g., village, region, zone) it may or may not be accepted
- Community-Based Development (CBD) développement communautaire. Comments: The French term reflects only a status or situation of development, and misses the idea that the process is driven by the community itself. See 'community development'
- Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) gestion communautaire des forêts. Comments: The two terms are identical in meaning
- community-based group groupe communautaire
- Community-Based Integrated Ecosystem Management (CBIEM) gestion communautaire et intégrée de l'écocystème. Comments: A particle is added in the middle of the French term, for purely aesthetical reasons
- Community-Based Management (CBM) gestion communautaire. Comments: This is an acceptable translation
- Community-Based Marine Resource Management (CBMRM) gestion communautaire des ressources marines
- Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Gestion Communautaire des Ressources Naturelles (CGRN). Comments: a number of other more or less related terms are in use among CBNRM stakeholders, both individuals and organizations/NGOs, among them: (1) Gestion à base communautaire des ressources naturelles, (2) Gestion communautaire des terroirs, (3) Gestion consensuelle de ressources naturelles, (4) Gestion locale par les communautés de base des ressources naturelles, (5) Gestion locale des ressources naturelles, (6) Gestion des ressources naturelles, (7) Gestion des ressources naturelles en partenariat avec les autorités communales, (8) Gestion des ressources naturelles par les communautés de base, (9) Gestion des terroirs, (10) Management des ressources naturelle sur base communautaire, (11) Réseau communal de gestion des ressources naturelles, (12) Réseau de gestion de ressources naturelles, and (13) Réseau pour la gestion communautaire des ressources naturelles. There is very little agreement on which of these terms most closely correspond to 'community-based natural resource management'. Likewise, the criteria for deciding this are also not agreed upon (see Page Dictionaries, Background). Based upon the advice of several CBNRM Net members, the above term has been chosen, partly because it represents a straightforward enlargement or extension of a universally accepted term, namely 'gestion des ressources naturelles' (and with an equally accepted abbreviation, namely 'GRN'), partly because it is a relatively simple term in construction, and partly because it provides for introducing an abbreviation that builds upon the 'GRN' form and corresponds nicely to 'CBNRM'
- Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) practitioner agent de gestion communautaire des ressources naturelles. Comments: The French word 'agent' goes beyond the idea of 'user' carried by the English word. 'Agent' is much more involved compared with 'practitioner'
- Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) stakeholder acteur de (la) gestion communautaire des ressources naturelles. Comments: 'Acteur' is preferred to 'actionnaire' which is used only in the financial domain
- Community-Based Organization (CBO) organisation communautaire
- Community-Based Resource Management (CBRM) Gestion communautaire de ressource. Comments: Acceptable translation
- Community Conserved Area (CCA) Aire du Patrimonie Communautaire (aire de conservation communautaire). Comments: The term 'zone communautaire conservée' is also used. IUCN term
- community development développement communautaire. Comments: See 'Community-Based Development' (CBD)
- Community Development Association (CDA) association pour le développement communautaire
- Community-Driven Development (CDD) développement induit par la communauté. Comments: The French term implies that development is initiated by the community or village, but not that the process is also lead by the community of village. A World Bank term

- gestion (1) administration, (2) management. Comments: This is a problematic term to translate. The English term 'management' could possibly also have been used, but 'gestion' belongs - or belonged traditionally - more in the public sector, and has the implication of administration-from-above. This meaning of 'gestion' thus does not carry the meaning of the English word 'management' which can be used with reference both to the public sector and civil society. The term 'gestion' may gradually be broadening its meaning to accommodate the meaning of the English 'management' (parallel to the English word 'management' being imported into French, as an anglicism), and it is in the latter sense that it is used here. See 'management
