Holistic resource management

Introduction

This tool was developed as part of the World Bank supported project "The West Africa Pilot Pastoral Program" (WAPPP), implemented in the period 1994 - 2003, with support from Norway. The tool applies specifically to pastoral (nomadic) subsistence practices in West Africa. It includes a manual (English and French version available) and a large number of images. The manual (both the English and French language versions) is listed in Category Documents, and was also presented in CBNRM Net Newsletter no. 24 (March 2004). This page is also available in a French version.

The Group consists of the following material:

Description
The manual was developed under the West African Pilot Pastoral Program (WAPPP), implemented from 1994 to 2002 in seven African Sahelian countries by the World Bank, with Norwegian co-financing. The program aimed at assessing the relevance to pastoral communities of West Africa of the holistic resource management model currently implemented in other parts of the world. This manual is the first one to be designed exclusively for analphabet pastoral communities. It has been developed taking advantage of the extensive work provided by people, such as Lyra Srinavasan, involved with participatory processes aimed at a genuine and effective empowerment of rural and urban communities. This skill development package includes a field manual on 290 pages and 372 supporting images, requiring around forty training hours of different members of the community, over one to seven weeks, according to the intensity of the training process.
Comments
A number of WAPPP staff were involved in the production of the tool. The manual, together with a number of images (see below), constitutes an integrated training package.
