Good forest governance

Introduction

A number or organizations joined forces to create the Initiative on Promoting Good Forest Governance in Asia and the Pacific. The Initiative aimed to address good forest governance within a wider social, political and international framework and through improving linkages among local, national and international processes. It focused on clarifying the relationships, rights, responsibilities and incentives among key actors and providing a framework to create the structures, mechanisms and cross linkages necessary to tackle future challenges.

Rather than developing a formal organization, the main emphasis was on a two-year feasibility, learning and development process to test the assumptions of the association, support strategies and efficacy of such an Association. Logistically, the Initiative was located at the Regional Community Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific (RECOFTC) in Bangkok, Thailand.

A summary of the workshop on Good Forest Governance held in Bali, Indonesia, 1-2 June 2002 is available at www.recoftc.org/forgov/Prepcom_outcomes.html. The Initiative is presented in CBNRM Net Newsletter no. 18, June 2002 (see Category Newsletters).
